In brief
SEO aims to rank your pages in search results so people click through. GEO aims to get your business mentioned, recommended and cited inside answers written by AI engines such as ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. GEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it, but it is measured differently and reaches further than your own site.
Key points
- SEO wins clicks from a list of results, while GEO wins a place inside a written answer.
- Crawlability, indexing, helpful content and reputation matter for both.
- GEO measures mentions, position in the answer, sentiment and citations rather than rank and clicks.
- Third-party pages such as directories, reviews and comparison articles carry more weight in GEO.
- AI answers vary from run to run, so GEO results are read as trends from repeated samples.
- Most businesses need both, with the balance set by how their buyers search.
What is the difference between GEO and SEO?
SEO gets your pages ranked in a list of search results. GEO gets your business named inside an answer that an AI engine writes. One competes for a click. The other competes for a mention, a recommendation and a cited link.
They share most of their foundations. A search-enabled AI engine still needs to find, crawl and trust your pages before it can use them. So generative engine optimisation is best seen as a layer on top of SEO, not a separate discipline.
How do GEO and SEO compare side by side?
The table sets out the main differences. The rows that change most are how success is measured and whose pages matter.
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Main goal | Rank pages and win clicks | Be mentioned, recommended and cited in AI answers |
| Where it shows | Google and Bing results pages | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode |
| What a query looks like | Short phrases, often two to five words | Full questions with context, such as budget or location |
| Unit of success | Position and click-through | Mention, position in the answer, sentiment, citation |
| How stable results are | Fairly stable day to day | Varies from run to run, so read as a trend |
| Whose pages matter most | Your own pages | Your pages plus directories, reviews, lists and forums |
| Main data sources | Search Console, analytics, rank tracking | Repeated prompt runs, cited sources, AI referral traffic |
| Risk to watch | Losing rankings | Being left out, or described wrongly |
What stays the same between GEO and SEO?
The technical and quality basics stay the same. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, as it would for a normal result.
That means the usual checklist still applies.
- Pages can be crawled and indexed, and important text is in the HTML.
- Content is written for people and answers the question properly.
- Authors and the business behind the site are clear and credible.
- Other trusted sites link to you and mention you.
- The site loads quickly and works on a phone.
OpenAI takes a similar line for ChatGPT search. Its help pages say a site becomes eligible when it allows OAI-SearchBot to crawl it. There is no separate submission process. If you already do solid SEO, you have a head start.
What changes when you add GEO?
Five things change in practice. Each one alters what you track or where you spend time.
The answer replaces the list. A results page shows ten links and the buyer chooses. An AI answer often names three or four businesses and explains why. Being fourth in a written answer is not like being fourth on a results page. A buyer skimming the answer may stop at the first name that fits.
Position inside the answer matters. Named first with a reason attached is worth far more than a passing mention at the end. That is why GEO tools weight share of voice by position.
Other people's pages carry more weight. For "best" and "near me" style questions, engines lean heavily on directories, review sites, comparison articles and forums. Your own site may not be cited at all, even when you are named. There is more on this in how AI engines choose sources.
Results move around. Ask the same question twice and you may get two different lists. So one check proves little. GEO relies on repeated samples and trends over weeks.
Accuracy becomes your problem. A results page shows your own title and description. An AI answer describes you in its own words. It can get your prices, locations or services wrong, and you need a way to spot that.
What is the difference between SEO content and AI-optimised content?
Good SEO content and good AI-optimised content are mostly the same thing. Both answer the question clearly, show expertise and cite sources. The difference is in how the page is read.
Search engines rank a whole page. AI engines often lift one or two sentences. So every section needs to stand on its own. Put the answer in the first sentence under each heading. Use specific names, numbers and dates rather than vague claims.
The original GEO research paper backs this up. In its tests, adding quotations, statistics and cited sources made content more visible in AI answers. Keyword stuffing, an old SEO habit, did not help.
Do you need both GEO and SEO?
Most businesses need both, but the balance depends on how their buyers search.
- A local service business, such as a plumber or a dental group, still gets most enquiries from Google and the map pack. GEO work here focuses on reviews, directory listings and accurate details.
- A B2B software company often sees buyers ask AI tools to compare vendors. GEO matters a lot, especially being named in comparison and "best tools for" answers.
- An online shop relies on product search, where SEO and shopping feeds still lead. GEO helps with research-stage questions before the buyer is ready to purchase.
If you only have budget for one, fix SEO basics first. They feed both. Then add GEO tracking so you can see whether AI answers mention you and what they say.
Should you hire an AI search company instead of focusing on SEO?
It usually makes sense to hire for both together rather than one instead of the other. The foundations overlap so much that splitting them tends to create gaps.
When talking to any agency, a few questions help. Ask how they measure visibility in AI answers and how often. Ask whether they can show which pages the engines cite. Ask how they deal with answers changing from run to run. Anyone who promises a guaranteed mention in ChatGPT is overselling. The same goes for anyone who says SEO no longer matters. Our view on that is in is SEO dead?
Where does GEO work happen that SEO often misses?
GEO work reaches pages that many SEO plans leave alone. The aim is to be described well wherever the engines look, not only on your own domain.
- Review sites. Engines often draw on review platforms when asked who is good or reliable. Recent, detailed reviews give them something to repeat.
- Directories and trade bodies. A listing on a respected directory, with correct details, is a common source for local and trade questions.
- Comparison and "best of" articles. For "best X for Y" questions, these lists are among the most cited pages. Being included, and described fairly, matters.
- Forums and Reddit. Honest discussion threads get cited for questions about real experience. You cannot buy your way in, but you can take part openly and helpfully.
- Your own facts. Old pages, press releases and out of date listings can all feed wrong details into answers. Tidying them up is part of the work.
An SEO plan might touch some of these for link building. GEO looks at them for a different reason, because they shape what the answer says.
How long do GEO and SEO take to show results?
Both take time, and neither has a fixed timetable. SEO changes usually show over weeks to months, as pages are crawled, indexed and re-ranked.
GEO has two speeds. Anything that changes what engines find when they search can show within weeks, such as a corrected directory listing or a clearer page that already ranks. Anything that depends on what a model learned in training moves more slowly, because it waits for new model versions. It helps to set expectations with that split in mind.
How do you measure GEO and SEO together?
You can measure both from the same few sources, as long as you know what each one shows.
- Search Console shows clicks and impressions from Google. Its generative AI report shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode.
- Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report that counts citations in Microsoft Copilot and Bing's AI summaries.
- Google Analytics 4 can show visits that arrive from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and other AI tools.
- Prompt tracking runs your buyer questions through each engine on a schedule and records mentions, position and sources.
The first three tell you what already happened on your site. Prompt tracking tells you what buyers see in the answer, including when you are not there at all. The AEO vs GEO vs SEO guide covers how answer engine optimisation fits into this picture.
How Axiom GEO helps
Axiom GEO puts classic search and AI search in one login. Rank tracking records daily Google positions, and AI visibility tracking runs your prompt set across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews. Each answer is read for mentions, position, sentiment, competitors and cited pages. AI traffic analytics joins Google Analytics 4 and Search Console data and shows visits from AI tools. That lets you see SEO and GEO results side by side rather than in separate reports.
