Google AI Overviews and AI Mode tracking

Axiom GEO checks live Google results for your keywords and records whether an AI Overview shows, whether your site is cited, which sources Google picked and what changed since the last check. Google AI Mode is covered through the Search Console Generative AI performance report, which you upload so its daily impressions build up over time.

Key points

  • AI Overviews are read from live Google results for the keywords you choose.
  • Each check records whether an overview shows, whether you are cited, which sources are cited and what changed.
  • Google AI Mode is covered by uploading the Search Console Generative AI performance report, because Google's API does not expose it.
  • AI Overview presence sits next to daily rank tracking, so you can see both in one place.
  • Each AI Overview check costs 12 credits.

What does the AI Overview tracker tell you?

It tells you which of your keywords now show a Google AI Overview, and whether your site is one of the sources. It also shows which other sites Google picked and what changed since the last check. That covers the question most teams ask first. Is Google answering my keywords itself, and am I part of that answer?

An AI Overview sits above the normal results for many searches. A page can rank well and still be left out of the overview. So it helps to track the overview as its own thing, not only your position.

How does AI Overview tracking work?

It reads live Google results for the keywords you choose and records what it finds.

  1. Choose your keywords. Add the searches that matter to your business, such as "how long does a new boiler take to fit".
  2. Set the location. Google results change by place, so you can set a location for each market.
  3. Run the checks. Each check reads the live results and looks for an AI Overview.
  4. Record the detail. For each keyword it records whether an overview showed, whether you were cited and which sources were cited.
  5. Compare with last time. Changes are picked out, so you can see when an overview appears, disappears or changes its sources.

Each AI Overview check costs 12 credits, and every credit spent is logged.

How is Google AI Mode covered?

AI Mode is covered through Search Console, because Google's API does not expose AI Mode data. Search Console has a Generative AI performance report. You upload it to Axiom GEO, and each upload adds daily impressions to the history.

Over time that builds a record you can chart and compare. It is less direct than the AI Overview checks, and we would rather say so plainly. For more on how AI Mode works, see our guide to Google AI Mode.

What do you see on screen?

You see a list of keywords with a clear marker for each one that shows an overview. Next to it are your citation status and the cited sources.

CheckWhat it shows
Overview presentWhether Google showed an AI Overview for the keyword
You are citedWhether one of your pages is among the sources

The same keywords can sit in rank tracking, where you can filter by SERP features. That means you can pick out every keyword with an AI Overview and see your position for each one.

Is Google AI Overview affecting your traffic?

It may be, and your own data is the best place to look. Axiom GEO shows overview presence next to your rankings and Search Console clicks. If clicks drop while your position holds and an overview has appeared, that is worth a closer look.

We don't claim to know the exact effect for any site. It varies by keyword and by how much the overview answers on its own. What you can do is spot the pattern in your own numbers and decide where to focus.

Why does AI Overview tracking matter?

It matters because the overview often sits above the first organic result. If Google cites a competitor there, they get seen first. Tracking the sources shows which kinds of pages Google trusts in your topic, and that feeds into AI citation tracking across every engine.

Content opportunities also include AI Overview gaps. These are keywords where an overview shows, others are cited and you are not. Each one can get an AI analysis with the closest page to improve and an outline to follow. It might be worth starting with the keywords where you already rank on page one. Those are often the pages closest to being picked up as a source.

Who uses it?

SEO teams use it to explain changes in clicks that rankings alone can't explain. Local businesses use it with a location set for each area they serve, which ties in with local and multi-market AI visibility. Agencies use it to show clients which keywords now carry an overview and where the client is cited.

Our guide on how to appear in Google AI Overviews is a good place to start if you want to improve what you find.

Where it fits

Google AI Overviews sit inside AI visibility tracking with ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude. Rank tracking gives daily Google positions for the same keywords. AI citation tracking shows the sources across every engine. Content opportunities turn overview gaps into pages to write or improve.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI Overview tracker?

An AI Overview tracker checks Google results for your keywords and records when an AI Overview appears and which sites it cites. Axiom GEO also records what changed between checks. That shows you which keywords now carry an overview and whether your pages are among the sources Google uses.

Can you track Google AI Mode?

Partly, and we are open about how. Google's API does not expose AI Mode data. Axiom GEO covers it through the Search Console Generative AI performance report, which you upload. Each upload adds daily impressions, so the history builds up over time inside the platform.

What triggers a Google AI Overview?

Google decides when to show an AI Overview, and it does not publish a full list of triggers. In practice they tend to show for questions and for searches where a short summary helps. Tracking your own keywords is the most reliable way to see which of them carry an overview today.

Is Google AI Overview affecting my organic traffic?

It may be, and the best way to find out is to look at your own data. Axiom GEO shows which keywords carry an overview next to your rankings and your Search Console clicks. If clicks fall while rankings hold and an overview appears, that is a sign worth looking into.

Why is Google AI Overview wrong sometimes?

AI Overviews are written from pages Google finds, and some of those pages are out of date or simply wrong. The overview can also mix details from more than one source. Checking which sources are cited helps you find where a wrong detail came from.

How do I get cited in Google AI Overviews?

There is no switch for it, but some things help. Pages that answer the question clearly, rank well for it and are easy for Google to read are more likely to be used. Our guide on appearing in AI Overviews goes through the steps, and content opportunities flag keywords where others are cited and you are not.
