In brief
To rank in ChatGPT, make sure OpenAI's search crawler can reach your site. Write key pages so a short passage answers each buyer question, and get accurately listed on the review sites, directories and articles ChatGPT cites. Then track real buyer questions over time, because answers vary and no one can guarantee a mention.
Key points
- ChatGPT has no fixed rankings, so the aim is to be mentioned early and cited often.
- It answers from what the model learned in training and from live web searches.
- OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.
- ChatGPT rewrites a question into searches, and location and memory can shape them.
- Third-party pages such as reviews, directories and comparison articles are often what it cites.
- Track a fixed set of questions many times, because single answers vary.
The steps at a glance
- 1
List the questions buyers ask ChatGPT
Write down 20 to 30 real questions in your buyers' words, including location, budget and needs. Group them by stage, from early research to choosing a supplier.
- 2
Check what ChatGPT says today
Ask each question several times with search on, in a temporary chat. Note who is named, in what order, why, and which pages are cited.
- 3
Let OpenAI's search crawler in
Check that robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot and that your CDN or firewall does not block OpenAI's published search bot IP addresses.
- 4
Make sure search engines index your key pages
ChatGPT search sends rewritten queries to search providers, so pages that are not indexed or rank poorly are less likely to be found. Check Google and Bing coverage.
- 5
Write key pages answer-first
Put each buyer question in a heading and answer it in the first sentence underneath. Use specific facts such as prices, locations, dates and named experts.
- 6
Get onto the pages ChatGPT cites
Look at the review sites, directories and comparison articles cited for your questions. Make sure you are listed on them, with correct details and recent reviews.
- 7
Keep your facts consistent
Match your name, address, services and prices across your site, Google Business Profile and directories, and describe the business in structured data.
- 8
Track and correct over time
Re-run the same questions on a schedule and watch the trend in mentions, position and citations. Trace any wrong detail to its source page and fix it there.
Can you actually rank in ChatGPT?
You cannot rank in ChatGPT the way you rank in Google, because there is no fixed list. Each answer is written fresh. What you can do is make your business more likely to be mentioned, mentioned early, described well and cited with a link.
So "ranking in ChatGPT" really means three things. You are named when buyers ask relevant questions. You are named near the top, ideally with a reason. And your own pages, or good pages about you, are among the sources it links to.
How does ChatGPT decide which brands to mention?
ChatGPT draws on two sources. The first is what the model learned in training. The second is what it finds when it searches the web, which it does when a question needs current information.
OpenAI launched ChatGPT search in October 2024. It uses third-party search providers and content from partners. According to OpenAI's help centre, ChatGPT rewrites your question into one or more targeted searches and sends them to those providers. It may use your approximate location, and your saved memories if memory is turned on, when it rewrites the question.
It then reads what comes back and writes an answer. The brands it names tend to be the ones that appear clearly and positively across those pages. For a question like "best garden room builders in Aberdeenshire", those pages are often directories, review sites and comparison articles rather than builders' own websites. There is more on this in how AI engines choose sources.
How to rank in ChatGPT, step by step
These steps follow the order that tends to work best. The early ones cost little and remove blockers. The later ones take longer and build real presence.
Step 1. List the questions buyers ask ChatGPT
Start with real questions, not keywords. People ask ChatGPT longer questions than they type into Google, with more detail about their needs. A homeowner might ask which kitchen fitters in Leeds offer finance and have good reviews for shaker kitchens.
Write down 20 to 30 of these. Take them from sales calls, enquiry forms, reviews and forum threads. This becomes your prompt set, the fixed list you will track.
Step 2. Check what ChatGPT says today
Ask each question in ChatGPT with search turned on. A temporary chat helps, so your own history has less effect. Ask each one a few times, because the answer will vary.
Note who is named, in what order and why. Click the citations and note which pages ChatGPT used. This tells you where the answer comes from, which is the most useful thing you will learn.
Step 3. Let OpenAI's search crawler in
OpenAI says sites that disallow OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, apart from navigation links. Its help centre adds that your host or CDN must allow traffic from OpenAI's published search bot IP addresses.
Check your robots.txt and any firewall or bot protection. Many sites block AI bots by accident through a CDN setting. Blocking GPTBot is a separate choice, because GPTBot is used for training, not search. See AI crawlers and robots.txt for the detail.
Step 4. Make sure search engines index your key pages
ChatGPT search finds pages by searching. OpenAI names Microsoft among the providers it sometimes works with. So pages that are not indexed, or that rank poorly for the question, are less likely to be found.
Check that your key pages are indexed in Google and Bing. Fix thin pages, duplicate pages and pages that only load their text through scripts.
Step 5. Write key pages answer-first
ChatGPT lifts short passages. Make each one easy to lift. Put the buyer's question in a heading and answer it in the first sentence underneath. Then add detail.
Use specific facts. Say which towns you cover, what a typical job costs, how long it takes and who does the work. Vague lines such as "quality service at fair prices" give ChatGPT nothing to repeat.
Step 6. Get onto the pages ChatGPT cites
Go back to the citations from step 2. List the domains that come up most for your questions. For many local and trade questions, these are review platforms, directories, trade body listings and "best of" articles.
Make sure you are on those pages with correct details. Where a comparison article leaves you out, it can be worth contacting the author with useful, factual information. For B2B and software questions, industry round-ups, review platforms and Reddit threads often matter most.
Step 7. Keep your facts consistent
ChatGPT gets more confident about a business when the same facts appear in many places. Keep your name, address, phone number, services and prices the same across your website, Google Business Profile and listings.
Describe the business in structured data too. Organization or LocalBusiness markup, with sameAs links to your official profiles, helps connect them. The entity SEO guide explains how.
Step 8. Track and correct over time
Re-run your prompt set on a schedule, weekly or every two weeks. Watch the trend in how often you are named, where you appear and which pages are cited. The method is set out in how to track brand mentions in AI search.
When ChatGPT gets a detail wrong, trace it to the page that says it. Correct it there, then check again. The steps are in when AI gets your business wrong.
How is ranking in ChatGPT different from ranking in Google?
The main difference is that Google shows a list and ChatGPT writes a reply. On Google, being fifth still puts your link in front of the searcher. In ChatGPT, the reply may name only three or four businesses, and the order is chosen fresh each time.
The sources differ too. Google ranks your own pages. ChatGPT often forms its view from pages about you, such as reviews, directories and articles, and may not link to your site at all. So a business can rank well on Google and still be missing from ChatGPT, or the other way round.
The measures change as a result. For Google you track positions and clicks. For ChatGPT you track how often you are named across many runs, how early, in what tone, and which pages were cited.
Do reviews affect what ChatGPT says?
Reviews often shape both whether you are named and how you are described. When a buyer asks who is good or reliable, ChatGPT tends to look for pages that judge businesses, and review platforms are an obvious source.
It helps to have a steady flow of recent, detailed reviews on the platforms that appear in your citations. Replies to reviews help too, because they show a real business that listens. Detail matters more than star count alone. A review that says "fitted a full kitchen in four days and left the house spotless" gives ChatGPT something specific to repeat.
Why does ChatGPT mention a competitor instead of you?
Usually because the competitor appears more clearly on the pages ChatGPT reads. They may have more reviews, a place in a well-known comparison article, or pages that answer the question directly.
Sometimes it is simply wording. A small change in the question can lead to different searches and so different names. Location and memory can also shift the answer for each user. That is why a single screenshot from a colleague is not a reliable guide. A pattern across many runs is.
What does not help you rank in ChatGPT?
Several popular tactics do little or cause harm.
- Asking ChatGPT to remember your brand. Your own chats do not change what other people are told.
- Stuffing pages with keywords. The original GEO research paper found keyword stuffing did not improve visibility in AI answers.
- Posting fake reviews or planted forum comments. They break platform rules and can damage trust when found.
- Buying a guaranteed placement. There is no paid route into ChatGPT's written answers.
- Relying on one file or schema type. These help machines read your site but will not make an unknown business appear.
How Axiom GEO helps
ChatGPT visibility in Axiom GEO runs your prompt set through OpenAI's search-enabled model on a schedule, so each answer comes with the web pages it cited. Every answer is read for whether you are mentioned, your position, sentiment, the competitors named and whether you were recommended. AI citation tracking shows the domains and pages ChatGPT cites most for your questions, sorted by type. Answers are collected through the API rather than the consumer app, so personal history and location in the app can make small differences.
