What is Google AI Mode?

AI Mode is a Google Search mode where the results page becomes an AI conversation. It breaks a question into many searches, writes an answer with links to sources and lets people ask follow-up questions.

What does it mean in practice?
A couple planning a kitchen refit opens AI Mode and asks how to compare three quotes for a kitchen with an island. Rather than a list of links, they get a written answer, links to sources and a box for follow-up questions. A kitchen company can show up as a linked source, or be named in the answer itself.
Google launched AI Mode in the US in May 2025 and has since widened it. Google says it uses a query fan-out technique, breaking a question into subtopics and running many searches at once. It then writes one answer from the results.
Why does it matter for AI search?
In AI Mode the answer is the page. Fewer people reach classic results, so being a cited source matters more. Because of the fan-out, a page can be pulled in for a question it was never written to target, as long as it answers one part well.
Tracking it is harder than tracking rankings. Google's API does not expose AI Mode data. Search Console now has a Generative AI performance report that shows impressions.
