Google AI Mode, what it means for your business

Ian DuncanFounder, Axiom Flux and AxiomAIReviewed 6 min read

In brief

Google AI Mode is a conversational search mode inside Google that answers complex questions in full, with follow-ups and links. It breaks each question into subtopics and runs many searches at once, a method Google calls query fan-out. For businesses it means more questions answered in one place, and impressions you can now track in Search Console.

Key points

  • AI Mode is a separate, chat-style search mode in Google, launched in the UK in July 2025.
  • It uses query fan-out, splitting a question into subtopics and running many searches at once.
  • AI Overviews appear inside normal results, while AI Mode is a full conversation the user chooses.
  • Google says there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Mode beyond normal indexing and snippet eligibility.
  • Pages that cover a topic and its follow-up questions have more chances to be used.
  • Search Console's generative AI performance report shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode.

What is Google AI Mode?

Google AI Mode is a chat-style search mode inside Google. You ask a question in full, often with several parts, and Google writes a detailed answer with links. You can then ask follow-up questions, as you would with ChatGPT.

Google first introduced AI Mode as a test in March 2025. It described it as a mode that expands what AI Overviews can do, with more advanced reasoning. It is aimed at questions that need exploring, comparing and reasoning, the kind that used to take several searches.

When did AI Mode launch in the UK?

AI Mode began rolling out in the UK on 28 July 2025, according to Google's UK announcement. It had launched in the US in May 2025, with no sign-up needed.

It appears as a separate option in Google Search. Users choose to open it. That makes it different from AI Overviews, which Google adds to normal results on its own.

How does query fan-out work in AI Mode?

Query fan-out means Google splits one question into several smaller ones and searches for them all at once. Google describes it as breaking your question into subtopics and issuing a multitude of queries on your behalf. It then pulls the results together into one answer.

Google does not publish the exact searches it runs, so here is an illustration. Imagine someone in Edinburgh asks AI Mode what their options are for replacing the windows in a 1930s semi, and roughly what it might cost. Behind the scenes, Google might search for window styles that suit 1930s houses and for rules in conservation areas. It might also look at the cost of uPVC against timber, and at installers in Edinburgh with good reviews.

Each of those searches brings back its own pages. The final answer may cite a council page, a trade body, a cost guide and a couple of local firms. So a business can be cited for one slice of the question even if it would never rank for the full question.

For the most demanding questions, Google has also described Deep Search, which it says can run hundreds of searches to build a fully cited report.

How is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?

AI Overviews sit inside normal Google results. AI Mode replaces the results page with a conversation. The table sets out the main differences.

Google's guidance on AI features treats both the same way for site owners. There are no additional requirements to appear in either. A page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in normal Search. If you want to work on overviews, see how to appear in Google AI Overviews.

What does AI Mode mean for your business?

AI Mode means more of the research stage happens inside Google, in one conversation. A buyer can compare options, check costs and shortlist suppliers without opening many tabs. Your business is either part of that conversation or it is not.

There are three practical effects.

Topic coverage matters more. Because of fan-out, Google looks for pages that answer each slice of a question. A site that covers the main question and its natural follow-ups has more ways in.

Third-party pages still count. When a question involves choosing a supplier, AI Mode may cite reviews, directories and comparison articles as well as business sites. Your presence on those pages shapes whether you are named.

Impressions may matter as much as clicks. Some users will read the answer and act on it without clicking. Being named and cited is part of the result, even when it does not show up as a visit.

What kinds of questions do people ask in AI Mode?

People tend to bring longer, more detailed questions to AI Mode than to the normal search box. They add context such as budget, location, the size of the job or what they have already tried. They also follow up, narrowing the answer step by step.

For a business, that changes how you research demand. Keyword tools show short phrases. AI Mode questions look more like the questions customers ask on the phone or in an enquiry form. A B2B software company might see "which HR platform works for a 60-person firm with staff in the UK and Ireland, and what does it cost". A dental group might see a question about the cost, timing and payment options for implants.

Collecting these questions from sales calls, enquiries, People Also Ask and forums gives you a better map of what AI Mode is answering. The prompt research guide sets out how to build that list.

How do you get your business into AI Mode answers?

You get into AI Mode answers the same way you get into Google's other results, with a few shifts in emphasis. Google says no special optimisation is needed, so start with sound SEO.

  • Make sure key pages are indexed and snippet-eligible. Check robots.txt, your CDN and any nosnippet or noindex rules.
  • Map the follow-up questions. For each main service, list what buyers ask next about cost, timing, rules, options and risks. Answer them on the page or on linked pages.
  • Answer first under each heading. Fan-out searches pull specific passages. Make each one clear on its own.
  • Show who you are. Name authors, show experience, and keep your Google Business Profile and Merchant Center details current, as Google suggests.
  • Be present where buyers compare. Check the review sites and directories cited for your topic and make sure your details there are right.

Content opportunities and question research help with the second point. They show which related questions exist and which of them other sites answer better.

How do you measure Google AI Mode?

The main source is the generative AI performance report in Google Search Console. Google's help page says it shows how your site performs in generative AI features on Google Search, covering AI Overviews and AI Mode. You can look at organic impressions over time, and split them by page, country, device and date. There is an export button for the chart and table data.

A few limits are worth knowing.

  • The report shows impressions, so it tells you that your pages appeared, not what the answer said about you.
  • The data is not available through the Search Console API, so it cannot be pulled into other tools automatically.

The practical answer is to export the report regularly and keep a running history. Clicks from Google, including AI features, still show in your normal Search Console and analytics data. Then pair it with your own tracking of real buyer questions, which shows what the answers say, who else is named and which pages are cited. How to measure AI visibility explains how the two fit together.

No one outside Google knows. For now it sits alongside normal results as an option, and AI Overviews and the map pack still appear in normal Search. Many searches are quick lookups where a list of links works fine.

The safer plan is to prepare for both. The work that helps in AI Mode, such as clear answers, strong topic coverage and accurate listings, also helps in normal results. None of it is wasted if the balance shifts slowly.

How Axiom GEO helps

Axiom GEO covers Google AI Mode through the Search Console generative AI report. You export it from Search Console and upload it, and the daily impressions build up into a history over time. This is needed because Google's API does not expose this report. Google AI Overviews tracking reads live Google results for your keywords and records whether an overview shows, whether you are cited and which sources are used.

Frequently asked questions

What is Google AI Mode?

Google AI Mode is a conversational way to search inside Google. You ask a detailed question, it writes a full answer with links, and you can ask follow-ups. Google says it uses a query fan-out technique, breaking a question into subtopics and running many searches at once. It launched in the US in May 2025 and the UK in July 2025.

How is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are short summaries that Google adds above the normal results for some searches. AI Mode is a separate mode the user opens, where the whole page is a conversation. AI Mode suits longer, multi-part questions and follow-ups. Both may use query fan-out, and both link to web pages.

How do I track my visibility in Google AI Mode?

The main source is the generative AI performance report in Google Search Console. It shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode, which you can break down by page, country, device and date. It is a site-level view, so pair it with your own question tracking to see what the answers say.

Do I need to do anything special to appear in AI Mode?

No. Google says there are no additional requirements and no special optimisations needed for AI Mode or AI Overviews. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to show a normal snippet. After that, clear answers and good coverage of related questions give you more chances to be used.

Does AI Mode send traffic to websites?

It can. AI Mode answers include links to the pages used, and some users click through for detail, to compare or to buy. Many questions will be answered without a click, so impressions and mentions become part of how you judge success. Check your own Search Console and analytics data over time.

Is AI Mode available in the UK?

Yes. Google announced that AI Mode began rolling out in the UK on 28 July 2025. It had launched in the US in May 2025, after a test period in Google's Labs programme earlier that year.
