What is AI referral traffic?

Also known as AI traffic, LLM traffic, ChatGPT referral traffic

Definition

AI referral traffic is visits to your website that come from AI tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude or Copilot. It usually happens when someone clicks a link or citation in an AI answer.

Key points

  • AI referral traffic is visits that come from clicks in AI tools.
  • OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links, which makes those visits easy to spot.
  • Some AI visits lose their referrer and show up as direct traffic.

What does it mean in practice?

A bathroom showroom notices visits in Google Analytics 4 with a source of chatgpt.com. Someone asked ChatGPT about walk-in showers, saw the showroom's guide cited, and clicked through. That visit is AI referral traffic.

Some of it is easy to spot. OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links. Other tools show up by their referring domain, such as perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com or claude.ai. Some visits lose their referrer, for example when a link is copied from an app, and appear as direct traffic.

AI referral traffic is the part of AI visibility you can see in analytics. It is usually small next to organic search, but the visitor may arrive further along, since the AI has already done some of the comparing. It also shows which pages AI engines send people to, which are not always the ones you would expect.

It helps to set up a separate channel group for AI sources in GA4, so this traffic does not hide inside referral or direct. AI traffic analytics in Axiom GEO connects GA4 and Search Console with read-only access. It reports visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, claude.ai, Copilot and others. Our guide to AI traffic in GA4 shows how to set it up.

Common questions

How do I see AI traffic in GA4?

Look at traffic acquisition by session source and filter for AI domains such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and claude.ai. A custom channel group that collects these sources in one place makes the trend much easier to follow over time.

Why is my AI referral traffic so low?

It is often small next to organic search, and some of it is hidden. Many AI answers do not lead to a click, and some clicks lose their referrer and appear as direct. Visibility in the answers themselves may be a better guide to how AI engines treat you.
