What is AI visibility?

Also known as AI search visibility, LLM visibility, AI brand visibility

Definition

AI visibility is how often, how prominently and how accurately a brand appears in answers from AI engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews. It covers the questions its buyers actually ask.

Key points

  • AI visibility covers whether a brand is named, how early, how it is described and which rivals appear instead.
  • It is measured by running a fixed set of buyer questions through several AI engines on a schedule.
  • It is always a sample, so trends over weeks matter more than a single run.

What does it mean in practice?

A home care agency wants to know if AI engines recommend it. It writes down the questions families ask, such as which home care agency in Dundee is best for overnight support. Those questions run through several engines on a schedule. Each answer is read to see if the agency is named, how early it appears, how it is described and which competitors are named instead.

The result is a picture of AI visibility. It shows where the brand is present, where it is missing, and which engines describe it well or poorly.

You cannot see AI answers in a normal analytics tool. A buyer can ask ChatGPT for a shortlist, pick a competitor and never visit your site. AI visibility is how you find out that happened.

It is always a sample. AI answers change from run to run. Consumer apps can also differ a little from API answers because of personal history, location and model version. So it helps to track the same prompts over weeks and look at the trend, not a single run.

Our guide on how to measure AI visibility explains the method. AI visibility tracking is the part of Axiom GEO that runs your prompt set and reads every answer.

Common questions

How is AI visibility measured?

It is measured by running a set of buyer questions through AI engines on a schedule and reading each answer. Common measures are how often the brand is named, where it appears, whether it is recommended, the tone used and which pages are cited. Comparing those with competitors on the same questions gives the clearest picture.

Why does my brand appear in some AI answers but not in similar questions?

AI answers are generated fresh each time, so small changes in wording, location or timing can change which brands are named. Engines that search the web may also find different pages for each question. That is why it helps to track many related prompts and look at the pattern, not one answer.

How accurate are AI visibility tools?

They are as accurate as the sample they take. Good tools collect real answers from the engines and read them carefully, but answers vary run to run. Consumer apps can also differ a little from API answers because of personal history, location and model version. Treat results as a trend, not an exact count.
