What is NAP consistency?

Also known as name, address and phone number, NAP citations, local citations

Definition

NAP consistency means your business name, address and phone number are written the same way everywhere they appear online, including your website, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles.

Key points

  • NAP stands for name, address and phone number.
  • Small differences in how details are written can make one business look like two.
  • Conflicting listings give AI engines a chance to repeat an old address or number.

What does it mean in practice?

A dental group moved one practice across town two years ago. Its website shows the new address, but three directories still list the old one, and one has a phone number that no longer works. That is a NAP consistency problem.

Small differences count too. "Unit 4, 12 High Street" on one site and "12 High St" on another may look the same to a person. To a machine they can look like two places. Picking one exact version and using it everywhere avoids that doubt.

AI engines build answers from many sources at once. If those sources disagree, the engine may pick the wrong detail, or be less sure the listings are all the same business. That is one way AI answers end up giving an old address or phone number.

It helps to start with the listings AI engines and Google cite most in your area, then work outwards. Local citations in Axiom GEO tracks directory listings and their status, whether live, claimed, pending or not claimed. Answer accuracy can then show whether AI answers still repeat old details. Our guide to local SEO and AI search covers the wider picture.

These terms connect to NAP consistency.

  • Map pack, where consistent listings help local rankings.
  • Hallucination, which conflicting details can lead to.
  • Entity, how engines recognise your business as one thing.
  • Source domain, the sites AI engines cite in your area.

Common questions

Does NAP consistency still matter?

Yes. Search engines and AI engines both compare details across many sources. When they agree, it is easier to be sure the listings are all the same business. When they disagree, engines may show the wrong detail or trust the business less.

How do I fix inconsistent listings?

Pick one exact version of your name, address and phone number and use it everywhere. Start with your website and Google Business Profile, then the directories and review sites that get cited most in your area. Claim listings where you can, so you can keep them up to date.
