What is the map pack?
Also known as local pack, 3-pack, local 3-pack, Google map pack
Definition
The map pack is the block of local business listings Google shows with a map for searches with local intent, such as plumber near me. It usually lists three businesses drawn from Google Business Profile.
Key points
- The map pack is Google's block of local listings shown with a map.
- Google says local results are based on relevance, distance and prominence.
- The same profiles, reviews and listings that help in the map pack feed local AI answers too.
What does it mean in practice?
Search for an emergency locksmith in Dundee and Google shows a map with pins and a short list of businesses. Each has its name, star rating, review count, opening hours and buttons to call or get directions. A locksmith in that list can get calls without anyone visiting its website.
Google says local results are based on relevance, distance and prominence. A complete Google Business Profile, the right categories, steady reviews and consistent details across the web all play a part. It is also called the local pack or the 3-pack.
Why does it matter for AI search?
Local AI answers tend to draw on much of the same information. Business profiles, reviews and directory listings are common sources when AI engines answer near me questions. A business that is strong in the map pack often has the material AI engines need.
It helps to track both. Rank tracking in Axiom GEO can filter by local pack and track positions down to town level in the UK. Local AI visibility runs the same prompts per country or region to show how AI answers change by place. Our guide to local SEO and AI search brings the two together.
