What is answer engine optimisation (AEO)?

Ian DuncanFounder, Axiom Flux and AxiomAIReviewed 6 min read

In brief

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the practice of shaping your content so search engines and AI tools can use it as the direct answer to a question. That covers featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice assistants, Google AI Overviews and chat tools like ChatGPT. It builds on SEO and relies on clear, answer-first writing.

Key points

  • AEO aims to have your content used as the answer, not only listed as a link.
  • Answer engines include featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice assistants, AI Overviews and AI chat tools.
  • Google says you cannot mark a page up to win a featured snippet, so the writing does the work.
  • Answer-first headings and paragraphs, specific facts and clear authorship help most.
  • AEO depends on SEO, because the page still has to be found and trusted.
  • Measure AEO by the questions you win and the ones where someone else is used instead.

What does answer engine optimisation mean?

Answer engine optimisation means making your content the answer, not only a link to it. The term is usually searched with US spelling, as answer engine optimization, or simply as AEO. The idea is that more and more searches end with a direct reply rather than a list of pages.

That reply might be a featured snippet at the top of Google, an expanded People Also Ask box, a spoken answer from a voice assistant, or an AI-written answer. In each case, something has picked a passage and decided it answers the question. AEO is the work of making your passage the one that gets picked.

What counts as an answer engine?

An answer engine is any search tool that gives a direct answer rather than only a list of results. The main ones today are these.

  • Google featured snippets. A box at the top of the results that quotes one page's answer.
  • People Also Ask. Related questions that expand to show a short answer from a page.
  • Voice assistants. Tools that read one answer aloud, often taken from a snippet.
  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. AI-written answers built from several pages, with links.
  • AI chat tools. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, which write answers and often cite sources.

The older answer engines tend to quote one page. The newer AI engines blend several pages into one answer. That newer side is often called generative engine optimisation. The overlap is covered in AEO vs GEO vs SEO.

How is AEO different from SEO?

AEO is narrower than SEO and sits on top of it. SEO decides whether a page ranks. AEO decides whether a passage on that page is used as the answer.

A page can rank well and still lose the answer to a lower page with a clearer reply. A page can also be written perfectly and never be used, because it does not rank or cannot be crawled. So the two go together. Fix the SEO so the page is found, then write it so the answer is easy to lift.

How do answer engines choose an answer?

Answer engines look for a passage that answers the question clearly and comes from a page they trust. No one outside the search companies knows the full method. But the public guidance is consistent.

Google says you cannot mark up a page to win a featured snippet. Its systems decide whether a page would make a good one. For AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says there are no additional requirements beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet.

ChatGPT search works by rewriting your question into one or more searches and sending them to search providers. It then reads the results and writes an answer. So the pages it can use are the pages those searches find.

The practical lesson is the same across all of them. Be findable, be trusted, and make the answer obvious.

How do you do answer engine optimisation?

AEO follows a simple routine. It suits any business, from a local trade firm to a B2B software company.

  1. Collect real questions. Use sales calls, enquiry emails, People Also Ask, autocomplete and forums. Keep the wording customers use. The prompt research guide covers this in more depth.
  2. Match each question to one page. Pick the page that should own the answer. If none fits, note it as a gap.
  3. Put the question in a heading. Use the words people type, not internal jargon.
  4. Answer in the first sentence. Give the full answer straight away, then add detail, examples and exceptions.
  5. Use the right format. Steps as a numbered list, options as a table, a definition as one clear sentence.
  6. Show who is behind it. Add a named author with real experience and date the page. Google's guidance on helpful, reliable content puts weight on who wrote a page and why.
  7. Keep it current. Prices, hours and rules change. An out of date answer is worse than none.
  8. Check what wins. Search your questions regularly and note whose answer is used. Where it is not yours, look at why.

What does an answer-first paragraph look like?

An answer-first paragraph gives the reply in its opening words and saves the context for later. Here is an example from a made-up kitchen company with branches in Yorkshire.

Before. "At our company we pride ourselves on being flexible and customer focused. We know life is busy, which is why we try to fit around you as much as we can."

After. "Yes, we offer Saturday appointments. Our Leeds and Harrogate showrooms open from 9am to 1pm every Saturday for home visits and quotes."

The second version can be lifted as it stands. It answers the question, names the places and gives the times. An engine can quote it without guessing.

Does structured data help with AEO?

Structured data helps engines understand a page, but it does not choose the answer for you. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in May 2026, so FAQ markup no longer changes how a result looks.

Markup such as Organization, LocalBusiness and Article still has a job. It tells engines who you are, where you are and who wrote the page. That helps them connect your content to your business. There is more in schema markup for AI search.

What are the most common AEO mistakes?

Most AEO mistakes come from writing for the brand rather than for the question.

  • Burying the answer under a long introduction.
  • Using clever headings that do not match what people ask.
  • Answering ten questions in one long paragraph.
  • Giving vague claims such as "competitive prices" instead of a range.
  • Leaving old answers live after prices or rules change.
  • Relying on markup and skipping the visible text.

Fixing these is often quick. Rewriting the top of five or six key pages can make a real difference to how easily they are quoted.

How do you know if AEO is working?

You know AEO is working when more of your target questions are answered with your content. The simplest check is a list of 20 to 50 questions, searched each month, with a note of whose answer appears.

For Google, record whether a featured snippet, a People Also Ask answer or an AI Overview shows, and whether your page is the one used. For AI chat tools, record whether your business is named and whether your page is cited. Search Console also helps. A page that starts winning answers often shows more impressions for question-style searches, even if clicks move less.

Keep the question list fixed for a few months. If you keep changing it, you cannot tell whether a change came from your work or from the list.

The same habits carry straight into AI search. AI engines lift passages in much the same way featured snippets do, only from several pages at once. A page written for AEO is already in good shape for Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity.

The main thing AI search adds is scale. It answers open questions such as "which firm should I use", and it draws on reviews and directories as well as your site. So AEO on your own pages is a strong start, but not the whole job.

How Axiom GEO helps

On the Premium plan and above, QA Finder pulls People Also Ask questions, Google autocomplete and Reddit questions for your topic. For each question it can build a content pack with a quick answer and an FAQ block, ready to paste into a page. Content opportunities flags AI answer gaps and AI Overview gaps, where engines cite others and not you. Page analysis scores each page on headings, meta, structured data, content and freshness, with a fix list.

Frequently asked questions

What is AEO in simple terms?

AEO means writing and structuring your content so a search engine or AI tool can lift it as the answer to someone's question. Instead of only aiming for a ranked link, you aim for your words, facts or business to be the reply the person sees or hears. It is a layer on top of normal SEO.

Is AEO the same as SEO?

No, but it depends on SEO. SEO gets a page ranked. AEO shapes how the answers on that page are written, so an engine can pick one passage and use it directly. A page that does not rank or cannot be crawled will rarely be used as an answer, however well it is written.

How do I start with answer engine optimisation?

A good place to start is a list of the real questions your customers ask. Match each one to the best page on your site. Then put the question in a heading and answer it fully in the first sentence underneath. Add detail, proof and a named author after that.

Does AEO help with ChatGPT and Perplexity?

Yes. ChatGPT search and Perplexity look pages up and then write an answer from what they read. Clear, answer-first passages with specific facts are easier for them to use and cite. For questions about which business to choose, third-party reviews and directories also matter a lot.

Is AEO worth doing for a small business?

Usually yes, because most of it is simply clearer writing on pages you already have. Answering the questions customers ask, in plain words, near the top of the page, helps readers and engines alike. It rarely needs new tools to begin, and it costs little beyond time.

Does schema markup win answer boxes?

Not on its own. Google says you cannot mark a page up to be chosen as a featured snippet, and it stopped showing FAQ rich results in May 2026. Structured data still helps engines understand who you are and what a page covers. The answer itself has to be clear in the visible text.
