What is an AI visibility score?

Also known as AI search visibility score, AI brand score

Definition

An AI visibility score is a single number that sums up how visible a brand is in AI answers. It is usually built from how often the brand is mentioned, where it appears and how it is described.

Key points

  • Each tool builds its score differently, so scores from two tools are not directly comparable.
  • Common inputs are mention rate, position, recommendation, citations and sentiment.
  • The trend against the same competitors on the same prompts matters more than the number itself.

What does it mean in practice?

Tools build the score in different ways, so two tools can give the same brand different numbers. The common inputs are mention rate, position in the answer, whether the brand is recommended, citations of its pages and sentiment.

Say a garden room company is named in the same number of answers as a rival. The rival is listed first and recommended each time. The garden room company sits near the end of most lists and is never recommended. Its score should come out lower, even though the mention counts match.

In Axiom GEO the main measures are share of voice, weighted by position, and a 0 to 100 prominence score. The prominence score folds in recommendation, citations and sentiment.

A score helps you see the trend and compare engines, markets and competitors. It is less useful on its own. There is no industry standard, so a good score depends on your market and your rivals.

The best test is whether your score moves up against the same competitors over time, on the same prompt set. Our guide on how to measure AI visibility explains what to look at beyond the headline number. AI visibility tracking shows the underlying answers, so you can see why a score moved.

These terms feed into an AI visibility score.

Common questions

What is a good AI visibility score?

There is no industry standard, so a good score depends on your market, your rivals and the tool. A useful test is whether your score is rising against the same competitors, on the same prompts, over time. Leading your category on the questions that bring in work matters more than any fixed number.

Why do different tools give me different scores?

Each tool uses its own prompts, engines and formula. One might count any mention, another might weight by position or sentiment. Answers also vary run to run. Comparing scores across tools tells you little, so it helps to pick one method and track it consistently.
