AI search engine optimization, a practical guide for US businesses

Ian DuncanFounder, Axiom Flux and AxiomAIReviewed 9 min read

In brief

AI search engine optimization is the work of getting your business found, described correctly and recommended in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot. Let the AI crawlers in, get indexed in Google and Bing, answer buyer questions plainly, fix your listings and reviews, then track real questions over time.

Key points

  • Most AI engines search the web before they answer, so pages that can be crawled and indexed come first.
  • Google says there are no extra requirements for AI Overviews and AI Mode beyond normal indexing and snippet eligibility.
  • ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini can name the pages they used, which shows you where to get listed.
  • Listings and reviews on Google Business Profile, Yelp, BBB, Bing Places and industry directories shape local answers.
  • Answers vary from run to run, so track a fixed set of questions over weeks rather than trusting single screenshots.

The steps at a glance

  1. 1

List the questions your buyers ask AI

Write down 20 to 30 real questions in your buyers' words, with their city, budget and needs. This is the prompt set you will track.

  2. 2

Check what each engine says today

Ask each question in ChatGPT, Google, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot a few times. Note who is named, in what order, what is said and which pages are cited.

  3. 3

Let AI crawlers in and get indexed

Allow OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Googlebot and Bingbot in robots.txt and your CDN. Check that key pages are indexed in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

  4. 4

    Write key pages answer-first

Put each buyer question in a heading and answer it in the first sentence. Add specific facts such as service areas, price ranges, licenses and named experts.

  5. 5

    Cover the follow-up questions

Google may run several related searches for one question. Answer the natural next questions on the same page or on linked pages.

  6. 6

    Fix your listings and reviews

Make your name, address, phone, hours and services match across your site, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, BBB and industry directories.

  7. 7

Get onto the pages AI engines cite

List the directories, review sites, best-of articles and Reddit threads cited for your questions. Make sure you are on them with correct details.

  8. 8

    Measure and repeat

Re-run the same questions on a schedule. Watch the Search Console generative AI report, Bing's AI Performance report and AI visits in GA4, and fix wrong details at their source.

What is AI search engine optimization?

AI search engine optimization is the work of getting your business named, described correctly and cited when people ask AI engines for advice. That means ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. You will also hear it called generative engine optimization, answer engine optimization or LLM SEO. The work is much the same.

It builds on SEO. Most of these engines search the web before they answer, then write a reply based on the pages they find. So the aim is to be easy to find, easy to understand and trusted in the places the engines look.

This guide is written for US businesses. It covers how each engine finds its answers, then eight practical steps.

Why does AI search matter for US businesses now?

Because a large share of your buyers already use it. In a February 2026 survey of 5,119 US adults, Pew Research Center found 49% use AI chatbots. Some 44% had used ChatGPT, 24% Gemini and 17% Copilot. About four in ten use chatbots to search for information.

Google has moved the same way. AI Mode started rolling out to everyone in the US in May 2025. In its Q2 2026 earnings message, Alphabet said AI Mode had passed 1 billion monthly active users. It also said AI Overviews and AI Mode had been merged into one Search experience.

That changes where the clicks go. Pew Research Center found Google users clicked a normal result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% when none did. Being cited inside the answer appears to help. Seer Interactive found brands cited in an AI Overview earned 35% higher organic click-through rates than brands that were not cited.

Local buyers are there too. In BrightLocal's 2026 survey of 1,002 US consumers, 45% had used ChatGPT or other AI tools for local business recommendations.

How does each AI engine find its answers?

Each engine works a little differently, so the first checks differ too. The table sums up what each one does.

EngineWhere it looksNames its sources? What to check first
ChatGPTWhat the model learned, plus live web searches sent to search providersYes, when it searchesOAI-SearchBot allowed, pages indexed in Google and Bing
Google AI Overviews and AI ModeGoogle's index, often with several related searches per questionYes, with linksPages indexed and snippet-eligible, Google Business Profile
GeminiCan ground its answers in Google Search resultsYes, when groundedThe same as Google Search
PerplexitySearches the web for most questionsYes, numbered citationsPerplexityBot allowed
Microsoft CopilotMicrosoft's assistant, with citations reported in Bing Webmaster ToolsYesSite verified in Bing, Bingbot allowed, Bing Places

A few details are worth knowing. OpenAI says ChatGPT search sometimes rewrites your question into targeted queries sent to search providers. It may use an approximate location from your IP address to give local results. It may also share location with trusted third-party providers for things like nearby business listings.

Yelp matters more than it did. In July 2026, Search Engine Land reported a deal that gives ChatGPT access to Yelp reviews, ratings, photos and business details. For a restaurant, salon or contractor, a thin Yelp profile may now mean a thin ChatGPT profile too.

For Google, the rules are simple. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in normal Search. Gemini can use grounding with Google Search, which Google says connects the model to real-time web content and lets it show sources.

How to do AI search engine optimization, step by step

These steps start with checks that cost little and remove blockers. The later steps take longer and build real presence.

Step 1. List the questions your buyers ask AI

Start with real questions, not keywords. People ask AI longer questions with more detail about their needs. A Texas HVAC company might hear "who can replace a central AC unit in Austin this week, and roughly what does it cost". A dental group in Phoenix might hear "which dentists near Scottsdale do same-day crowns".

Write down 20 to 30 of these. Take them from sales calls, contact forms, reviews, People Also Ask and Reddit threads. This becomes the fixed list you track over time.

Step 2. Check what each engine says today

Ask each question in ChatGPT with search on, in Google, in Gemini, in Perplexity and in Copilot. Use a temporary or logged-out session where you can, so your own history has less effect. Ask each one a few times, because the answer will vary.

Note who is named, in what order and why. Click the citations and write down which pages were used. Keep location in mind too. A "near me" question asked from your office may not match what a customer across town sees.

Step 3. Let AI crawlers in and get indexed

OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, apart from navigation links. Perplexity's bot docs describe PerplexityBot as the crawler that finds and links pages in its answers. Google's AI features use Googlebot, and Copilot citations show up in Bing's tools.

Check your robots.txt and any firewall or bot protection. Many sites block AI bots by accident through a CDN setting. Then check your key pages are indexed in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. The AI crawlers and robots.txt guide lists each bot and what it does.

Step 4. Write key pages answer-first

AI engines lift short passages, so make each one easy to lift. Put the buyer's question in a heading and answer it in the first sentence underneath. Then add detail.

Use specific facts. Say which cities and zip codes you serve, what a typical job costs, how long it takes and who does the work. Show licenses, named experts and the date the page was last updated. Describe the business in structured data, such as Organization or LocalBusiness, and keep it in line with the visible text.

There is research behind this. The GEO research paper found that adding citations, quotations and statistics raised source visibility in generative engine answers by up to 40% in its benchmark.

Step 5. Cover the follow-up questions

Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use query fan-out. That means running several related searches across subtopics to build one answer. A page that answers the natural next questions has more chances to be picked.

Take a Chicago personal injury law firm. Behind "what is my car accident case worth" sit questions about filing deadlines in Illinois, how contingency fees work, what to do after a crash and how long cases take. Answer these on the same page or on well-linked pages nearby.

Step 6. Fix your listings and reviews

Listings carry a lot of weight in AI answers. A Yext study of 6.8 million citations in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity found 86% came from sources brands control. First-party websites made up 44% and listings 42%.

Make your name, address, phone number, hours and services match everywhere. Start with Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp and BBB. Then add the directories for your field, such as Angi for home services, Avvo for law firms, and Healthgrades or Zocdoc for medical practices.

Reviews shape how you are described. BrightLocal found 74% of consumers focus on reviews from the last three months. A steady flow of recent, detailed reviews gives AI engines something specific to repeat. The AI search for local businesses guide goes further on this.

Step 7. Get onto the pages AI engines cite

Go back to the citations from step 2. List the domains that come up most for your questions. For local and trade questions, these are often directories, review sites and "best of" articles. For B2B software, they are often industry round-ups, review platforms and Reddit threads.

Make sure you are on those pages with correct details. Where a comparison article leaves you out, it can be worth sending the author useful, factual information. On Reddit, be open about who you are and follow each community's rules.

Step 8. Measure and repeat

Re-run your question list on a schedule, weekly or every two weeks. Watch the trend in how often you are named, where you appear and which pages are cited. One answer on one day proves little.

Add the free data sources. Google Search Console has a generative AI performance report showing impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode. Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report for citations in Copilot. GA4 shows visits from AI tools. When an engine gets a detail wrong, trace it to the page that says it and fix it there.

Several popular tactics do little or cause harm.

  • Asking ChatGPT to remember your brand. Your own chats do not change what other people are told.
  • Stuffing pages with keywords. The GEO research paper found keyword stuffing did not improve visibility in AI answers.
  • Fake reviews or planted forum posts. They break platform rules and damage trust when found.
  • Buying guaranteed placement. There is no paid route into ChatGPT's written answers, and no one can promise a mention.
  • Blocking every AI bot by default. Blocking a search bot removes you from that engine's answers. Training bots are a separate choice.

How do you know it is working?

Look for trends over several weeks, not single wins. Good signs are a rising mention rate on your question list, being named earlier, more of your pages cited, and fewer wrong details. AI impressions in Search Console and visits from AI tools in GA4 should follow over time.

Be patient with the slower parts. Anything an engine finds by searching can change within weeks. What a model learned in training changes only when a new model version arrives.

How Axiom GEO helps

AI visibility tracking runs your question list through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude on a schedule, with US locations if you need them. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini search the web and name their sources, while Claude is asked without search to show what the model already knows. The AI Overviews tracker reads live Google results for your keywords, and AI Mode is covered by uploading the Search Console report. Answer accuracy checks each claim against a fact sheet you approve, on the Professional plan and above. Copilot is not tracked as an engine, though visits from Copilot show in AI traffic analytics. Plans are billed in pounds sterling from £500 a month, and the US pricing page shows an approximate dollar figure. See our US hub for more guides.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI search engine optimization?

AI search engine optimization is the work of getting a business named, described correctly and cited when people ask AI engines for advice. It covers ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot. It builds on SEO, because most of these engines search the web before they answer.

Is AI search optimization different from SEO?

It builds on SEO rather than replacing it. You still need crawlable, indexed, trusted pages. On top of that, you write passages that answer a question on their own, keep facts consistent across listings and reviews, and get onto the third-party pages engines cite. You also measure mentions and citations, not only rankings.

How do I get my business to show up in ChatGPT?

Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and your firewall, and make sure your key pages are indexed. Write clear pages that answer buyer questions, and keep your details right on the directories and review sites ChatGPT cites for your questions. There is no form to submit and no paid route into its written answers.

How do I optimize for Google AI Overviews and AI Mode?

Google says there are no additional requirements. A page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in normal Search. After that, answer the question near the top of the right page, cover the follow-up questions, show who wrote it, and keep your Google Business Profile accurate.

How do I show up in Microsoft Copilot?

Start with Bing. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, which has an AI Performance report that counts citations in Copilot. Make sure your robots.txt and firewall do not block Bingbot, and keep your Bing Places listing accurate. The rest is the same work that helps every other engine.

How long does AI search optimization take?

It works at two speeds. Changes to what engines find when they search, such as a fixed directory listing or a clearer page that already ranks, can show within weeks. Changes to what a model learned in training are slower, because they wait for new model versions.

Can I pay to appear in AI answers?

Not in the written answer. There is no paid route into ChatGPT's written answers, and Google says there are no special requirements for its AI features. Anyone selling guaranteed placement is selling something they cannot control. What you can do is improve the pages, listings and reviews the engines draw on.
