In brief
ChatGPT local business recommendations draw on the same places your customers check, your Google Business Profile, listings such as Yelp, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect, reviews and your own website. To get named, keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere, earn steady recent reviews, build real location pages and track prompts that name your city.
Key points
- In BrightLocal's 2026 survey, 45% of US consumers had used ChatGPT or other AI tools for local business recommendations, up from 6% in 2025.
- Yext found 86% of AI citations came from sources brands control, mainly their own websites and their listings.
- ChatGPT can use an approximate location and nearby business listings from third-party providers, and a July 2026 deal gives it Yelp data.
- Matching name, address and phone details across Google, Bing, Apple, Yelp, BBB and industry directories helps engines tie every mention to one business.
- Reviews shape both the AI answer and the customer's choice, and recent reviews count most with US consumers.
- Track local AI visibility with prompts that name the city, run per market and repeated over time.
The steps at a glance
- 1
Claim and fix your main profiles
Claim Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp and BBB, and make the name, address, phone, hours and categories identical on each.
- 2
Add your industry directories
List the business on the directories people in your field use, such as Angi, Avvo, Healthgrades or Zocdoc, with exactly the same details.
- 3
Build real location pages
Give each location or main service city its own page with its address, phone, hours, services and real local content, marked up as a LocalBusiness.
- 4
Earn recent reviews
Ask every happy customer for a review on Google and the sites that matter in your field, and reply to each review calmly.
- 5
Write local prompts
List the questions buyers ask with the city named, such as best emergency plumber in Dallas, for each service and each market.
- 6
Track by market and fix what is wrong
Run the prompts on a schedule, see who is named and which sites are cited, and correct any wrong details at their source.
How does a ChatGPT local business search work?
ChatGPT searches the web, reads listings and reviews, then names the businesses it can find, place in the right city and trust. Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity work in a similar way.
OpenAI's ChatGPT search help page explains some of the local detail. ChatGPT may use an approximate location from your IP address to give local results. It may show a map on mobile. It may share that location with trusted third-party providers for things like nearby business listings. It also sometimes rewrites your question into more targeted queries that it sends to search providers.
So when someone in Houston asks for a reliable AC repair company near them, ChatGPT may run several searches behind the scenes. It then reads what comes back, such as listings, review sites and business websites. A Texas HVAC company that is described clearly, and the same way, across those sources has the best chance of being named.
Google's AI features lean on Google's own data. Google's guide to generative AI features says Business Profile can help your products and services be visible in AI responses as well as other results. In its Q2 2026 earnings message, Alphabet said AI Overviews and AI Mode have been merged into one Search experience. Gemini can search Google too, and when it does, it names the pages it used.
How many Americans use AI to find local businesses?
A fast-growing share. BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 asked 1,002 US consumers and was published on February 11, 2026. It found 45% had used ChatGPT or other AI tools for local business recommendations, up from 6% in 2025. That made AI the third most used source, after Google and Facebook.
Trust is building as well. In the same survey, 40% said they trust AI platforms for business recommendations. Wider use is rising too. Pew Research Center found 49% of US adults use AI chatbots, and about four in ten use them to search for information.
Google was still the most used source in the BrightLocal survey, so none of this means Google no longer matters. But an AI answer may be the first thing a person reads. Pew also found that Google users who saw an AI summary clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, against 15% when no summary appeared. Being named inside the answer matters more than it used to. The AI search statistics page gathers more of these figures with their sources.
Where do AI engines get local business information?
Mostly from sources you can control. Yext studied 6.8 million AI citations from 1.6 million queries in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, collected between July 1 and August 31, 2025. It found 86% of citations came from sources brands control.
| Source type | Share of citations in the Yext study |
|---|---|
| First-party websites | 44% |
| Listings | 42% |
| Reviews and social | 8% |
| Forums | 2% |
The engines leaned different ways. Gemini favored websites, which made up 52.1% of its citations. OpenAI leaned on listings, at 48.7%. In healthcare, listings made up 52.6% of citations, which matters a great deal for dental and medical practices.
The practical point is simple. Your website and your listings are the two biggest things you control. Both need to be accurate, complete and in agreement with each other.
Which listings matter for AI search in the US?
The core set is much the same for many US local businesses. Then each industry has its own directories that buyers and engines tend to trust.
- Google Business Profile. Google says it can help your business show in AI responses as well as other results.
- Bing Places. Copilot searches with Bing, so an accurate Bing listing can help there and takes little time to keep up.
- Apple Business Connect. Controls how you appear in Apple Maps and Siri on the phones many of your customers carry.
- Yelp. Now feeds ChatGPT directly through the July 2026 deal covered below.
- BBB. A long-standing trust check for US buyers, especially when hiring contractors.
- Industry directories. Angi and Nextdoor for home services, Avvo for attorneys, and Healthgrades and Zocdoc for doctors and dentists.
Whatever the list, the details must match. That is what NAP consistency means, keeping your name, address and phone number identical everywhere. Say a Chicago personal injury law firm is "Smith & Lee Law" on Avvo and "Smith Lee Injury Attorneys LLC" on Google. That gives engines two names to reconcile, and an engine may treat them as two firms. Pick one version and use it everywhere.
Old details cause just as much trouble. A former address, an old phone number or a closed office can live on in a directory for years. Engines may repeat it long after you moved.
What does the Yelp and ChatGPT deal mean for local businesses?
It makes Yelp a direct input to ChatGPT. Search Engine Land reported a July 2026 deal that gives ChatGPT access to Yelp reviews, ratings, photos and business details. On August 10, 2026, Yelp announced table booking and waitlists inside ChatGPT for thousands of restaurants across the US and Canada.
For a restaurant in Yelp's rollout, a diner can now find you, read your reviews and book a table without leaving ChatGPT. For other businesses, your Yelp page is now more likely to shape what ChatGPT says about you.
A few things are worth doing now.
- Claim your Yelp page if you have not already, and check every detail.
- Add current photos, hours, services and a plain description of what you do.
- Reply to Yelp reviews, good and bad, calmly and helpfully.
- For restaurants, check that your booking and waitlist settings on Yelp are correct.
How much do reviews matter for AI recommendations?
A great deal, both for engines and for the people who read their answers. Google's local ranking help page lists reviews and ratings as part of prominence. AI engines also read what reviews say. When they explain a pick, they often echo review themes, such as "always shows up on time" or "clear about costs". So the words in your reviews matter as well as the stars.
US consumers set a high bar. In BrightLocal's 2026 survey, 97% read reviews for local businesses. And 31% want a rating of 4.5 stars or more, up from 17% in 2025. Recency counts too, with 74% focusing on reviews from the last three months. Volume matters as well, as 47% will not use a business with fewer than 20 reviews.
That points to a steady flow of recent reviews rather than a burst once a year. Ask every happy customer. Make it easy with a short link after the job. Reply to every review, good or bad. Never buy or fake reviews, as platforms remove them and they tend to read alike.
How should location pages work for AI search?
Each location needs its own page with real content. Engines need a clear page to cite when someone asks about a particular city.
A good location page for a dental group in Phoenix would cover these things.
- The full address, phone number and hours for that office.
- The services offered there, and the dentists who work there.
- The insurance plans accepted and whether new patients are welcome.
- Parking and how to find the office.
- Answers to local questions, such as which neighborhoods the office serves.
Mark up each page as a LocalBusiness on schema.org, or a more specific type such as Dentist. Link it to the parent brand so engines see one business with several offices. The details must match the page and the Business Profile exactly.
Service-area businesses have a different shape. A Dallas roofer or a plumbing company that covers a whole metro area has one base but many cities. Name the cities and zip codes you cover instead of writing "and surrounding areas". Write strong pages for the cities that matter most. Avoid dozens of near-identical city pages that only swap the name.
For a franchise with many locations, the same rules apply at a larger scale. The multi-location brands page covers how to manage listings and pages for every location.
What about law firms, medical practices and med spas?
Regulated businesses need extra care with accuracy. An AI answer that gets a practice area, a treatment or an offer wrong can cause real problems.
- Law firms. Keep practice areas, office locations and attorney bios consistent across your site, Avvo, Google and your state bar listing.
- Dental and medical practices. Listings made up 52.6% of healthcare citations in the Yext study, so Healthgrades, Zocdoc and insurer directories matter. Keep provider names and accepted insurance current.
- Med spas. Be clear about which treatments you offer and who performs them. Keep prices and offers current, because engines may repeat an old offer long after it ends.
If an engine gets something wrong, find the source and fix it there. The answer accuracy page explains how to check AI answers against your own facts.
How do you track AI visibility for local searches?
Name the city in the prompt, run it for each market and repeat it over time. A prompt like "best emergency plumber near me" does not work well through an API, because the API has no idea where "me" is. "Best emergency plumber in Tampa" gives a clear question you can repeat.
A simple prompt set for a med spa in Scottsdale might look like this.
- Best med spa in Scottsdale for lip filler.
- Which med spas in Scottsdale have good reviews for laser hair removal?
- How much does a chemical peel cost in Scottsdale?
- Is there a med spa in Scottsdale open on Saturdays?
- Who does the most natural-looking lip filler in Scottsdale?
Run the same prompts in each city you serve and compare. You may find you are named in one city and missing in the next. The sites cited in each answer show you which listings and pages to work on first.
Remember that tracking is a sample. Consumer apps also use a person's location, history and model version. So a tracked answer is a close reading of what engines say, not a copy of every customer's screen.
How Axiom GEO helps
Axiom GEO is run from the UK and works for US brands and agencies, with prompts that can run with US locations. Local AI visibility runs the same prompts per market and splits share of voice by geography. AI visibility tracking shows whether you are named in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, who else is named and which pages are cited. Local citations tracks your directory listings and whether each one is live, claimed, pending or not claimed. Google Business reviews pulls reviews daily for every location and drafts replies. Plans are billed in pounds sterling, and the pricing page shows an approximate US dollar figure, with more US guides on the US hub.
