AI search for local businesses, from HVAC to dental

AI search for local businesses means checking whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude name you when people ask for the best plumber, lawyer or dentist nearby. Axiom GEO tracks those questions in your area, shows who gets named instead, catches wrong details and keeps your Google reviews and listings in the same login.

Owners and marketing leads at US home services companies, law firms, dental and medical practices, med spas and other businesses that serve a local area.

Key points

  • Track the local questions buyers ask, such as the best HVAC company in a named city.
  • See which rivals get named and which sites the engines cite, such as Yelp, BBB or your trade directory.
  • Catch wrong phone numbers, hours, services or service areas in AI answers and find the page behind each one.
  • Pull Google Business Profile reviews daily and keep track of your directory listings.
  • Plans are billed in GBP, and local firms can also use Axiom GEO through their agency.

How does AI search for local businesses pick who to name?

It leans on the sources it trusts about a place. Buyers already use it this way. In BrightLocal's 2026 survey of 1,002 US consumers, 45% had used ChatGPT or other AI tools for local business recommendations. A year earlier it was 6%.

So a homeowner in San Antonio asks for the best AC repair company open on weekends. A parent in Phoenix asks which dental office nearby takes new patients. The answer is often a short list of names.

OpenAI says ChatGPT search may use an approximate location from your IP address to give local results. It may also share location with trusted providers for things like nearby business listings.

Where do those answers come from?

Mostly from sources you can influence. Yext looked at 6.8 million AI citations across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. It found 86% came from sources brands control, with first-party websites at 44% and listings at 42%. OpenAI leaned on listings, at 48.7% of its citations, and in healthcare over half of citations were listings.

Yelp may matter more than it did. In July 2026 OpenAI and Yelp agreed a deal that gives ChatGPT access to Yelp reviews, ratings, photos and business details, as Search Engine Land reported.

Which listings and review sites matter for US local businesses?

The general ones first, then the ones for your trade.

  • General. Google Business Profile, Yelp, BBB, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect.
  • Home services. Angi, for HVAC, plumbing, roofing and similar trades.
  • Law firms. Avvo, alongside your state bar listing.
  • Dental and medical. Healthgrades and Zocdoc, for dental offices and medical practices.

Which of these the engines actually cite varies by city and trade. AI citation tracking shows the domains behind your answers, sorted into directories, review sites, list articles and your own pages.

Reviews count too. BrightLocal found 97% of US consumers read reviews for local businesses, and 47% will not use a business with fewer than 20. And 74% focus on reviews from the last three months, so a steady flow beats an old pile.

What goes wrong for local businesses in AI answers?

Wrong details, repeated with confidence. A made-up Texas HVAC company still gets listed with an old number from a closed branch. A Chicago personal injury firm is described as handling workers' comp, which it dropped years ago.

These errors often start in an old listing or an out-of-date page. Answer accuracy checks each answer against an approved fact sheet of your business. It groups wrong details into issues and points to the page the engine cited. For Claude, which names no source, the source finder searches for pages that state the wrong detail.

What do you get from Axiom GEO?

The local tools you need, plus a clear view of what the engines say.

  • Local AI visibility. Local AI visibility runs your area questions with location-aware prompts and shows which rivals get named.
  • Accuracy checks. Wrong phone numbers, hours, services and service areas, traced to the pages behind them.
  • Reviews. Google Business Profile reviews pulls reviews daily, tags each to what drove it and drafts replies.
  • Listings. Local citations tracks listings such as Yelp, BBB and Bing Places, and whether each is live, claimed, pending or not claimed.
  • Markup. The schema generator builds LocalBusiness JSON-LD with your address and rating from Google Business Profile.

Reviews are pulled from Google Business Profile only, not from Yelp or other sites. On Premium, QA Finder can pull questions from pasted call notes, with personal details ignored and the text not stored.

What does a typical month look like?

For a plumbing firm or a med spa, a light routine is usually enough.

  1. Check the local answers. See whether you were named for your main questions and who was named instead.
  2. Fix wrong details. Correct the page or listing behind each accuracy issue.
  3. Reply to reviews. Work through new Google reviews, using the draft replies as a start.
  4. Tidy listings. Claim anything unclaimed on Yelp, BBB, Apple Business Connect or your trade directory.
  5. Improve one page. Make one service or city page clearer and more complete.

Which plan fits a local business?

A single local business needs one client workspace. The choice is mainly about which engines you want to track. Plans are billed in pounds sterling (GBP).

PlanPrice per month (GBP)What it covers
Starter£500One business, tracked on Gemini
Professional£799ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, plus answer accuracy
Premium£1,499Adds QA Finder and content rewrites

Gemini now searches Google and names its sources, so Starter shows which pages shape that answer. Professional suits many local firms, since it adds ChatGPT and answer accuracy. The US pricing page shows an approximate dollar figure at the current exchange rate.

Local businesses can also use Axiom GEO through an agency. Axiom GEO is run from the UK and works for US businesses, and the US overview has more.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT recommend local businesses?

Yes, when asked. A question like the best roofer in a named city often gets a short list of firms, with the pages it drew on. OpenAI says ChatGPT search may use an approximate location from your IP address for local results. In July 2026 OpenAI also struck a deal giving ChatGPT access to Yelp reviews and business details.

How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?

Start with the sources it reads. Keep Google Business Profile, Yelp, BBB and your industry directories accurate, earn steady recent reviews, and make your site say clearly what you do and where. Then check which pages the engines cite for your area and work on being named there. No one can guarantee a mention.

What if AI gives out our old phone number or wrong hours?

Answer accuracy checks each answer against an approved fact sheet of your business, drafted from your website and Google Business Profile. Wrong details are grouped into issues with a suggested fix. The source finder then shows the pages that state the wrong detail, which is often an old listing.

Does Axiom GEO pull in Yelp reviews?

No. Reviews are pulled daily from Google Business Profile only. Yelp still shows up in the platform, though. AI citation tracking shows when the engines cite Yelp or other review sites for your questions, and local citations lets you track the status of your Yelp listing.

Which plan suits a local business in the US?

Starter at £500 a month covers one business on Gemini, which now searches Google and names its sources. Professional at £799 adds ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity plus answer accuracy, and suits many local firms. Plans are billed in GBP, and the US pricing page shows an approximate dollar figure.

Is local SEO still worth doing with AI search?

Yes. Much of what helps in the map pack also helps in AI answers, such as accurate listings, good reviews and clear service pages. AI engines often draw on the same local sources. The change is that you now also need to check what the engines say about you, as well as where you rank.
