What is AI traffic attribution?

Definition

AI traffic attribution means working out how many visits, enquiries and sales came from AI tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Copilot. It usually uses the referrer in your analytics, so it counts clicks from AI answers but not people who read an answer and came to you another way.

Key points

  • Visits from AI tools usually arrive with the tool's domain as the referrer.
  • Attribution looks at conversions and revenue as well as visits.
  • It undercounts, because many people read an AI answer and then search or type your name.

Also known as AI referral attribution

What does it mean in practice?

AI traffic attribution refers to linking visits, enquiries and sales on your site back to the AI tools that sent them.

Most of it rests on the referrer. When someone clicks a link in a ChatGPT or Perplexity answer, the visit usually arrives with that tool's domain as the source. Grouping those sources shows how many visits AI tools sent, which pages they landed on and whether they turned into enquiries or sales. Our glossary entry on AI referral traffic covers the referrers themselves.

What can it not show?

It only sees clicks. Many people read an AI answer, then search for the brand or type the address, and those visits look like search or direct traffic. So the attributed figure is the part you can prove, not the whole effect.

In Axiom GEO, AI traffic analytics splits AI sources out of your GA4 data, with sessions, conversions and revenue for each one next to your Search Console clicks.

Common questions

Why does AI traffic attribution undercount?

Many people read an AI answer, then search for the brand or type the address. Those visits show as search or direct, not AI. So the AI figure is best read as the clicks you can prove, with the real effect likely higher.

How do I see AI traffic in GA4?

GA4 now has an AI Assistant channel, and you can build your own channel group or exploration using the AI referrer domains. Our GA4 guide walks through both.
