Which brands does AI recommend? The monthly index.

Each month we ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini the same buyer questions in each industry, and count which brands the answers name. The questions never mention a brand, so the answers show who the engines reach for on their own.

How the index works

Each industry has six buyer questions, such as which energy supplier is best in the UK right now. None of them names a brand. From the second day of each month we ask every question in ChatGPT with web search, in Perplexity and in Gemini, one industry a day.

A language model then lists the brands each answer names, in the order they appear. Comparison sites, review sites and regulators are left out unless an answer recommends them as the provider. Close variants of a name, such as EDF and EDF Energy, are counted as one brand.

A brand's share is the percentage of answers that name it. Average position is where it usually comes in the list. The index also counts which websites the engines cite as sources, which shows where the answers get their information.

It is a sample. AI answers change from run to run, so treat small moves with some caution. Our glossary explains share of voice and average position in answers in more detail.

Frequently asked questions

What is the AI visibility index?

It is a monthly league table of the brands AI assistants name when buyers ask for a recommendation in an industry. Each industry has a fixed set of questions that name no brand. We ask each one in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini and count which brands the answers name.

How is a brand's share worked out?

Share is the percentage of answers that name the brand at least once. If a brand is named in 12 of 18 answers, its share is 66.7%. Average position shows where the brand usually comes in the list of names, where 1 means named first.

Why do the questions never change?

Keeping the questions the same each month means the figures compare like with like. A change in a brand's share then comes from the answers, not from different questions.

How reliable are the figures?

They are a sample, not a census. AI answers vary from one run to the next, so small moves of a few points are usually noise. Bigger moves, or moves that last for several months, are more likely to mean something.

Can I see this for my own brand and questions?

Yes. The free AI visibility checker runs a quick one-off check. Axiom GEO tracks your own questions across six AI engines as often as daily and compares you with the competitors you choose.
