What is a prompt in AI search?
Also known as AI prompt, tracked prompt, buyer question
Definition
A prompt is the question or instruction a person types into an AI engine. In AI visibility tracking, a prompt is one of the buyer questions you run through the engines to see which brands they name.
Key points
- A prompt is the question a person asks an AI engine, written in their own words.
- Prompts are usually longer and more specific than search keywords.
- Good prompts come from real buyer language, such as enquiries, calls and forums.
What does it mean in practice?
A holiday cottage company might track prompts such as "dog friendly cottages in the Lake District with a hot tub". Another might be "is it better to book a cottage direct or through an agency". Each prompt is written the way a real person would ask it, not as a short keyword.
Prompts tend to be longer and more specific than search keywords. People add detail about budget, location, timing and needs. That detail changes which brands an engine names, so good prompts mirror real buyer language.
Why does it matter for AI search?
You can only measure what you ask. If your prompts are too narrow, or phrased in a way no buyer would use, the results will mislead you. A brand can do well on one prompt and vanish on a near copy of it, so a single prompt says little on its own.
Good sources of prompts are customer enquiries, sales calls, People Also Ask boxes, autocomplete and forum threads. Our prompt research guide explains how to build them. AI visibility tracking runs your prompts on a schedule across the engines you choose.
