In brief
These generative engine optimization statistics for 2026 show AI chatbots going mainstream in the US, fewer clicks on regular results when AI Overviews appear, and AI traffic that converts well. Each number links to its source with the date and sample size, plus a plain note on what it does and does not tell you.
Key points
- Pew found 49% of US adults use AI chatbots in 2026, up from 33% in 2024.
- Every click study here finds fewer clicks on regular results when an AI Overview appears.
- Adobe found AI traffic to US retail sites converted 42% better than non-AI traffic in March 2026.
- BrightLocal found 45% of US consumers used AI tools for local business recommendations, up from 6% in 2025.
- Yext found 86% of AI citations came from sources brands control, such as their websites and listings.
- Gartner's 25% drop in search volume by 2026 is a 2024 prediction, not a measurement.
What do the generative engine optimization statistics show?
They show AI search moving into everyday use in the US, with real effects on clicks and traffic. Every number below comes from a named study or company statement, with a link, the date and the sample where it is known.
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of getting your brand named and cited in AI answers. The what is generative engine optimization guide explains the basics. We checked each source in September 2026. Company figures are the company's own claims and surveys are samples, so read the note under each group.
How many people use AI search?
Close to half of US adults now use AI chatbots, and the biggest AI products report very large user numbers.
- 49% of US adults use AI chatbots, up from 33% in 2024. Pew Research Center, Americans and AI 2026, survey Feb 17 to 23, 2026, 5,119 US adults.
- 44% of US adults have used ChatGPT, up from 18% in 2023. Pew Research Center, same survey.
- Gemini 24%, Copilot 17%, Meta AI 14% and Grok 8% of US adults have used each of these chatbots. Pew Research Center, same survey.
- 24% of US adults use chatbots daily. Pew Research Center, same survey.
- About four in ten US adults use chatbots to search for information. Pew Research Center, same survey.
- More than 900 million weekly active users for ChatGPT worldwide. OpenAI, March 31, 2026.
- Over 1 billion monthly active users for Google AI Mode since it expanded globally the previous October. Alphabet Q2 2026 earnings, July 2026.
- 950 million monthly active users for the Gemini app. Alphabet Q2 2026 earnings, July 2026.
- May 20, 2025 was when AI Mode started rolling out to everyone in the US. Google.
- Over 10% more use of Google for the types of queries that show AI Overviews, in the US and India. Google, May 20, 2025.
What this does and does not tell you. Pew shows AI chatbots are now mainstream among US adults, and many use them to look things up. The OpenAI and Alphabet figures are worldwide and self-reported, and none of these numbers say how often people use AI to choose a business or buy something.
What happens to clicks when AI answers appear?
Clicks on regular results fall when an AI Overview appears, according to every study here. The size of the drop depends on how it was measured.
| Study | Date | Sample | Finding |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pew Research Center | July 2025 | See source | Clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits with an AI summary, against 15% without |
| Ahrefs | Feb 4, 2026 | 300,000 keywords, December 2025 data | Position one gets about 58% fewer clicks when an AI Overview appears |
| Seer Interactive | September 2025 | 3,119 search terms, 42 organizations, June 2024 to Sept 2025 | Organic CTR fell 61% on queries with an AI Overview |
Some findings point the other way, or add detail.
- 35% higher organic CTR and 91% higher paid CTR for brands cited in the AI Overview, compared with brands not cited. Seer Interactive, September 2025 update, same sample.
- Billions of clicks go to websites every week through AI features in Google Search, Google says. Alphabet Q2 2026 earnings, July 2026.
- 25% drop in traditional search engine volume by 2026, because of AI chatbots and virtual agents. This is a Gartner prediction made on Feb 19, 2024, not a measurement.
What this does and does not tell you. The direction is clear, since fewer people click through when an AI answer sits at the top. The studies measure different things in different ways, so their percentages cannot be compared or averaged, and none of them predicts what will happen to your own site.
The Gartner figure is a 2024 forecast and should be labeled that way. For more on searches that end without a click, see zero-click search.
How much traffic does AI send, and does it convert?
AI traffic to US retail sites is growing fast, and in March 2026 it converted better than other traffic. These figures come from Adobe's April 2026 retail analysis.
- 393% year over year growth in traffic from AI sources to US retail sites in Q1 2026. Adobe, April 16, 2026, over 1 trillion visits to US retail sites.
- 42% better conversion for AI traffic than non-AI traffic in March 2026. A year earlier, AI traffic converted 38% worse. Adobe, same data.
- 48% longer per visit for AI visitors. Adobe, same data.
What this does and does not tell you. In Adobe's data, visitors from AI sources to US retail sites converted better and stayed longer than other visitors. The data covers US retail only, and a growth rate does not tell you what share of all visits AI traffic makes up.
The AI traffic in GA4 guide shows how to find your own AI visits in analytics.
How do people use AI to find local businesses?
A large and fast-growing share of US consumers now ask AI tools for local recommendations, and reviews still shape the final choice. Most of these figures come from BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026.
- 45% of US consumers used ChatGPT or other AI tools for local business recommendations, up from 6% in 2025. That made AI the third most used source, after Google and Facebook. BrightLocal, published Feb 11, 2026, 1,002 US consumers.
- 40% trust AI platforms for business recommendations. BrightLocal, same survey.
- 97% read reviews for local businesses. BrightLocal, same survey.
- 31% want a rating of 4.5 stars or more, up from 17% in 2025. BrightLocal, same survey.
- 74% focus on reviews from the last three months. BrightLocal, same survey.
- 47% will not use a business with fewer than 20 reviews. BrightLocal, same survey.
- July 2026 saw a deal giving ChatGPT access to Yelp reviews, ratings, photos and business details. Search Engine Land.
- August 10, 2026 was when Yelp announced table booking and waitlists inside ChatGPT for thousands of restaurants across the US and Canada. Yelp.
OpenAI's ChatGPT search help page adds useful context. ChatGPT may use an approximate location from your IP address to give local results. It may also share location with trusted third-party providers for things like nearby business listings.
What this does and does not tell you. AI is now a common way for US consumers to find local businesses, and reviews still carry great weight. The BrightLocal figures come from a single survey of 1,002 people, so treat them as a guide. Our ChatGPT local business guide covers what to do about it.
Where do AI answers get their information?
Mostly from sources brands control, such as their own websites and their listings. These figures come from a Yext study of 6.8 million AI citations from 1.6 million queries in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, collected July 1 to Aug 31, 2025.
- 86% of citations came from sources brands control. Yext, October 2025.
- 44% of citations were first-party websites, 42% listings, 8% reviews and social, and 2% forums. Yext, same study.
- 52.1% of Gemini's citations were websites, as Gemini favored websites. Yext, same study.
- 48.7% of OpenAI's citations were listings, as OpenAI leaned on listings. Yext, same study.
- 52.6% of citations in healthcare were listings. Yext, same study.
What this does and does not tell you. Your website and listings are a big part of what these engines cite, so keeping them accurate pays off. Yext sells listings management, which is worth keeping in mind, and the data comes from summer 2025. Engines change often, so check the sources cited for your own questions with AI citation tracking.
What does research say helps you get cited?
Clear, well-supported content can raise how often a source is used, according to the original GEO research paper. The Seer finding above also suggests being cited has value.
- Up to 40% higher source visibility in generative engine answers from the methods tested. Aggarwal et al., GEO research paper, Princeton and others, measured on the authors' own benchmark.
What this does and does not tell you. The paper shows content changes can move visibility in a test setting. Its benchmark is not a live engine, so the figure is a best case from the study, not a promise. The Seer result shows cited brands earn more clicks, but it does not prove that being cited causes the lift.
How to use these numbers
Use them to explain why AI search matters, then measure your own brand. A few habits keep you honest.
- Quote the source, date and sample with any number you use.
- Do not add up, average or compare figures from different studies. They measure different things.
- Label predictions as predictions, especially the Gartner figure.
- Note whether a figure is US or worldwide, and whether it is a survey or a company claim.
- Check the date before you reuse a number in a client deck, as AI search changes quickly.
- Put your own data first. Tracked prompts, AI referral traffic and Search Console tell you more about your business than any market figure.

How Axiom GEO helps
These studies describe the market, and Axiom GEO measures your own brand. AI visibility tracking runs your prompts in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude and records who is named and which pages are cited. AI Overviews tracking checks whether an overview shows for your keywords, whether you are cited and which sources are used. AI traffic analytics shows visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and other AI sources through your GA4 connection. Axiom GEO is run from the UK and works for US brands and agencies. Plans are billed in pounds sterling, and the pricing page shows an approximate US dollar figure.
