What is prompt gap analysis?

Definition

Prompt gap analysis finds the questions buyers ask where AI engines name a competitor and not you. For each gap it shows which engines missed you, who they named instead and which sites they cited, so you can see where a page, a listing or a mention on another site would help most.

Key points

  • It starts from the questions you already track, not from keywords.
  • Each gap shows the engines that missed you, the rivals they named and the sites they cited.
  • Gaps where no engine named you and several named a rival are the ones to fix first.

Also known as prompt gaps, AI answer gaps

What does it mean in practice?

Prompt gap analysis refers to checking your tracked questions for the ones where AI engines name a competitor and leave you out.

It starts from your prompt set, the list of real buyer questions you track. For each question it takes the latest answer from each engine and asks two things. Were you named? Was anyone else named instead? Where the answer is no and yes, that is a gap.

What makes it useful?

The detail around each gap. It shows which engines missed you and which named you, the rivals named instead and the sites the engines cited. Those cited sites are often the quickest route in, such as a directory, a review site or a "best of" list you could be added to.

In Axiom GEO, the Prompt gaps screen lists every gap from the last 30 days with a priority. Each one can go to Work as a task or be exported to CSV. The content opportunities page explains how it fits with the other opportunity types.

Common questions

How is prompt gap analysis different from a keyword gap?

A keyword gap compares rankings for search terms. Prompt gap analysis compares written AI answers to buyer questions, and looks at who is named and which sites are cited. The two often point to different work.

What do you do with a prompt gap?

Look at the sites the engines cited for that question. If they are your competitors' pages, a clearer page of your own may help. If they are lists or directories, getting onto those pages is often quicker.
